Summer Employment Program

Applications are open for our summer employment program: Topeka Way To Work. Applications are due April 14. Interviews will take place starting at 5 p.m. April 24, 25 and 26 at the Holliday building, 620 SE Madison More details available on the application page and in the news release.
As part of her summer assignment, the youth employee who worked in Communications last year made a two-minute video about the program.

Recent updates

  • We are finalizing tallies from the budget priority polls from last week. Preliminary numbers show we received more than 600 responses, with infrastructure being the top priority on all four polls.
  • Between March 8 and 14, street crews completed 15,000 linear feet of crack sealing and swept 75 lane miles of streets.
  • Neighborhood Relations processed 10 warrants and had one demolition, 935 NE Monroe.
  • The City's application for Historic Tax Credits for the TPAC/City Hall steps project was approved.
  • Deputy IT Director Sherry Schoonover, Management Analyst Leigha Boling and I are in New York City this week for the national What Works CitiesSummit. Boling has been asked to serve on a panel to talk about our performance portal

Coming up

  • The Neighborhood Resource Expo will be this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Big Gage shelter house. Visit 10 booths and get free entry to the zoo that day. Also, this will be your final chance to weigh in on the 2018 budget priorities -- look for our booth at the event.
  • Topeka and Shawnee County are partnering again on the annual Curb Your Clutter clean up effort. Crews will be out in specific neighborhood improvement areas April 8, 15 and 22 to haul away bulk items left on the curb. More information, including the NIA schedule, can be found on the news release page.
  • Other public meetings coming up include the following:
    • The the Shadywood South neighborhood mill and overlay project: 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 27, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. The project will start somewhere between early April and July at the contractor's discretion. The contractor will have 90 days to complete the work after it starts.
    • Neighborhood meeting about changes to the Reser's PUD at SE 6th and Croco: 6 p.m. Monday, March 27, at the Rice Community Center. The changes do not add any new buildings to the site, but they slightly expand the perimeter of the site to allow for better truck circulation in the back of the building. Reser's is also requesting annexation of 18 acres into the city to accommodate the new site circulation.
    • The first of two neighborhood planning efforts associated with the SORT program in the Tennessee Town neighborhood will kick-off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, at First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 SW Buchanan.  The other SORT-selected neighborhood for 2017, Quinton Heights-Steele, will likely begin its plan in June. Both should take six months to finalize.
    • Coffee with a Cop: 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 31, Chick-fil-A, 17th & Wanamaker.
    • The reconstruction project on Wanamaker between 4th and 6th: 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Rasmussen College, 620 SW Governor's View. The corresponding waterline replacement project already has started.
